Five Months, 203 Posts, 15,000 Visits, One Blogtoberfest

(I'm gonna have to change the name of this blog, fer cryin' out loud!)

Blah, blah year-in-review, blah. I've only been blogging 5 months, so you don't have to wade through a whole freaking year of my inanities. Now shut up and read, cuz this'll be the shortest recap you'll read:

I started out on August 3, got Instalanche'd within three weeks, went to Helen'back, scored my very own signed copy of Max Hardberger's Freighter Captain, received unwanted attention from my very own troll-sicko-inmate (oh sure, I shared him with all of you!). But best of all--I met interesting new friends, great writers, funny folks and talented artists.

Add to that the acres of information, curiosities, video clips, new music, and helpful advice one can find in the Blogosphere and you've got more than just a buncha geeks with computers, you have geeks with computers who somehow are crazy enough to think this is all normal.

There's every reason to believe that 2008 will be interesting, but only if everyone else keeps writing, blogging, and not forgetting to get together in person once in a while. Soon!

Have a ¡Prospero Año Nuevo! and leave the Slacking to a professional.

Happy New Year to you Joanie! First - thanks for the book review on Max's book. I scored a signed copy for my husband for his birthday - he really enjoyed it!!! Woot!

Second - I'm very glad I've finally got you on my feed reader so I can remember to stop and say hi once in a while!

Maybe one day we'll have a chance to get to the same blog meet. :-)

Have a great evening!

See I'm pretty ignorant of this whole "get together in person" thing. Especially when it comes to people I read on the funny screen thingie.

I think that say's "Auld Lang Syne" in Chinese. Anyway, for peeps like me who are sticking close to home tonight, click on that link to hear the song in Anglo-Chinese, then you'll feel more included, if you want to. The best part is seeing the divine Vivian Leigh and the handsome Robert Taylor in scenes from an old 1940's romantic war film: Waterloo Bridge.

A bit of background on this traditional song:

Auld Lang Syne is an odd sort of song to have attained general currency, the words written as they are in a dialect that hardly anyone speaks or understands any more.  It has a peculiar power, though, perhaps especially so around midnight after a long evening's drinking and fellowship.  Its currency, by the way, is global:  visiting the People's Republic of China in 1982, as that nation was just emerging from the long, xenophobic Mao Tse-tung despotism, I found that there were three Western tunes known to everyone under thirty:  a feeble pop tune named Red River Valley, the old classic Clementine (which, however, Chinese people all believed to be of North Korean origin), and Auld Lang Syne.
"Auld lang syne" translates literally as "old long since," i.e. times long past.  "Guid-willie" means "hearty," or "filled with goodwill."  A "waught" is a deep draught of some potent drink. ###

Personally, I'm going to get a deep draught of some potent drink and watch "Out of Africa" and swoon, especially during the smashing New Year's Eve scene.

I hope you enjoy a deep draught of some potent drink too and have a fabulous New Year.

Dear me, but Out of Africa leaves me breathless! My favorite of all time.

If I remember back to those faraway days some 5 months back, it took a certain amount o'arm twistin' to get JoA to start this blog. Now it's an iconoclassic! More mayhem in '08!

Here's to a great 2008 for everyone!

William, what would it take to lure you southwards for a meet? Here in the DC vicinity, we tend to get together for baseball, hockey, beer and dinner... hell, pretty much anything.

Further south, they just get crazy. :D

Joanie... you are a whirlwind, an inspiration and a treat! So glad 2007 included meeting you here and in person.

May 2008 be all you want and more!
Happy New Year, dear.

Joanie...please keep blogging for many Happy New Years, forever.

Never one to be outdone, I scored two signed copies of E.L. Doctorow's "Sweet Land Stories" [from the man himself] and a signed copy of "Forever" by Pete Hamill.

Oh, and a "Godfather" paperback signed by Al Pacino. All long, somewhat amusing stories.

BTW, you and Teresa, as she suggjoosted, absolutely MUST meet. Hopefully I'll be at that same blogmeet, too.

A Happy New Year to all you Slackers!

I never make New Year's resolutions, because I can't keep 'em, so here's this year's: I'm gonna make it back to Florida at least once this year. Hah! I might even manage to overcome my crippling social ineptitude along the way and see a few of you strange but likable people, too.

[Shameless blog-pimping follows]

If y'all wanna see what Portland, Maine looked like this fine first day of 2008 as the sun came up, go look at my blog.

Hey Lizard! Those pictures were stunningly beautiful...thank you so much.

Get your leathery ol' ass down here and some of us Southerners will have pity on you and feed you some grits and collard greens. Happy New Year!

And maybe you could make me some biscuits 'n gravy??

Joan of Argghh! said...

Hmmm... not a bad idea. So get your Jooette butt over to Florida, Erica.

I can make buttermilk biscuits from scratch, light and fluffy like you wouldn't believe!

Testing... sorry Joanie - gonna spam your comments a moment while I check to see if I did the avatar thing right. :-)

Yay! Preview gives me the avatar!!! Happy New Year!

"got more than just a buncha geeks with computers"

Hell, sometimes I wish I was a geek! Maybe then I could understand a little bit about this "you committed a fatal error" piece of junk! But I just keep on keeping on least so far.

Yeah, bloggin' is a habit with me now...I have been at it some two and a half years and have put up over 6,000 posts of shit and wit..mostly shit. But for some reason there are a few who come back every day ..maybe just to see what I can screw up next...
